Vegan "Fish" Tacos

Recipe:

Servings: 3-4

Total time: 35-40 minutes

For the Fish:

  • 1 block extra firm tofu

  • 1 1/2 sheets of nori

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne

  • 1/2 tsp cumin

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tbs oil

For the Sauce

  • 2 heaping tbs tahini

  • juice of 1/2 a lemon

  • 2 tbs water

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp sriracha

Toppings I used:

  • lettuce

  • diced red onion

  • cilantro

  • avocado

  • salsa

  • tortillas

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Drain and press the tofu for at least 10 minutes.

  2. After pressing the tofu, slice it into 1/4 inch thick rectangles about 1 inch or so wide. Cut the nori sheets the same size as the tofu slices. Place the nori pieces on a greased baking pan and top each piece with one slice of tofu.

  3. Combine the salt, cayenne, cumin, and black pepper in a small bowl and then sprinkle over the tofu. Next drizzle the oil over top of the tofu. Bake the tofu for 20-25 minutes.

  4. While the tofu is baking, prepare the sauce by mixing all ingredients until smooth. The texture of the sauce should be somewhat thick and creamy. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

  5. Assemble the tacos by placing two pieces of the tofu on a tortilla and top with desired toppings and the sauce. Enjoy!

I wanted to make tacos for dinner on Tuesday but I also wanted to create a new recipe so I decided to challenge my culinary abilities by creating these vegan fish tacos! I haven't had fish tacos since before going vegan but I do remember liking them a lot. These were actually pretty easy to make and turned out delicious! The nori really helps to give the tofu that fish flavor. The toppings are totally interchangeable, I just used what I already had on hand. This is a fun recipe to change things up and try something new! Comment down below if you try this recipe and what you did or would do differently!

The nori even looks like fish skin. Great idea! Clever!
